You know (a term that I’ve picked up already in my short time back home) that you can’t beat a proper English Sunday roast dinner. Roast sirloin of beef, Yorkshire puds (I made ‘em), new spuds, carrots, cabbage and peas; accompanied by home made horse radish sauce and a gravy blended from the meat juices, onions, garlic, carrots, celery and a drop of red wine; and on top of all that, in the company of my family; I am in a kind of heaven.
In fact I’ve enjoyed it so much I’m going for a nap, but I had to write this down first 🙂
C’mon Winko. New spuds? Got to be roasties, surely? Preferably in goose fat. And where were the parsnips? We had roast gammon, with a honey glaze, and all that other stuff, but no Yorkshires. When I was a youngster, in Queen Victoria’s day, we had leftover Yorkshire pud as a sweet, served cold, with home-made strawberry jam. It tastes better than it sounds, believe me! OK, it was about 1958, but still a long time ago.
It was often served before we had out Sunday roast as a starter, no doubt to fill us up first. Or on occasion I remember the whole meal served up IN a pudding.
Eddy, Hi! Thanks for coming over to see my Tiny Cabin build blog! You are my first follower, and left my first comment. 🙂 I appreciate the positive remark more than you know.
I like trying recipes from England and thereabouts – filling, generally inexpensive, and tasty! So far the most unexpectedly good dinner was fish pie….
I’m looking forward to reading more, keep on blogging, just don’t let tit stop you building 🙂
You’ll have everybody migrating to God’s Own County if you let such ‘secrets’ out in such a persuasive way. Are you ever going back :0 ?
I’ll try and keep shtum 🙂
I haven’t had roast beef in over 30 years, but reading your account of it…I could almost taste it. Being with family makes it even better.
Yep, family made it for sure; just wait for your next grandchild, then sneak in a quick roast beef sandwich 🙂
You are probably still slumbering, but I am envious, as I operate on continental time and my roast is still in the oven 🙁 although I am already enjoying some wine 😉 Cracking Yorkie pud 🙂
It seems the time to dine in this household is determined by hunger and the time we get up; it was almost breakfast for some people 🙂
I’m jealous…As amazingly mouthwatering as that sounds I fear I wouldnt have been able to eat it today -not in the mood for ‘proper food’ and my son is away so…my sunday diet consisted of 3 cups of coffee, a packet of cheap jelly sweets, 8 caramel digestives and a slice of spicy meat pizza…my diet is so healthly! lol
Watch your nails 🙂
ha ha i thought about you when i noticed their colour change last night 🙂
It might have been the first roast beef in more than a year, but tasted that much better with the company 🙂
Sounds wonderful!!
In the company of family……..:)
