Random post

First of all, thank you Tracey and Solarbeez for helping me out with my problem viewing pages and apologies to anyone who is wondering where the post went that may have appeared in their reader and then disappeared. A brief explanation is that my internet provider stores pages on their servers, so when I try and view my site I see the one that they have copied. Even if I have updated my site, I might not see the changes until they update the copy they hold. For those of you who even bothered to read that, I added a page today Volunteers, check it out, I await your emails ๐Ÿ™‚

But back to the topic of this post, โ€˜Random Postโ€™ It is probably one of my most used buttons when I first discover a new blog. Of course I always check that latest post, normally followed by the About Page; I like to know who Iโ€™m reading about. and then I normally move onto the Random Post button from the WordPress menu; under the heading of the blog you are visiting, top left.

Thank you to http://shapeofthingstocome.org/ for the screen grab, please visit and try a random post ๐Ÿ™‚

I think itโ€™s all too easy just to check out the last post that someone has posted and this can often lead you with a false impression of the blog you have just visited, even reading the about page doesnโ€™t always give you an insight into the type of blog you may end up reading, or even following. So that’s why I head for the Random Post link, not only does it give you more of an insight, you often discover developing styles and occasionally come across some real gems that you wouldn’t normally expect from the author.

Of course I sometimes set myself the task of reading every post that they have ever published, but this can take quite some time with some of the more established sites, so once again Random Post can save the day and even if you only read one extra page every time you visit, you will soon catch up with them all ๐Ÿ™‚

So go on, next time you visit a new blog, or even go back to one you might follow, hit the random button and be enlightened. Maybe even leave a comment and remind the person of something that they have forgotten about as I did today with Ladysighs ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. Hi Eddy. Glad you solved the problem. Sorry I hadn’t seen it before; my most recent post became a ‘marathon’ and I’ve now got to catch up on my reading. Interesting the comment from Ladysighs above; I was beginning to wonder whether my ramblings from what might seem to be my ‘theme’ (in fact on this blog I don’t have one) could become tiresome for some readers.

  2. I never even thought of the ‘Random Post’ idea. Thanks for mentioning it. I tried it on my own blog to see what would come up. I wonder if it changes every time you add another blog. As you know my blog is all over the map. I thought about having two blogs, but I don’t think my little brain could handle it. ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Nah . . . I look at specific topics and keywords . . . gives me a better idea of what the person is interested in. Besides, random is based on an algorithm someone writes, and hence not generally random.

Aside all that, I’ve not been getting notices of new posts, and figure there had not been any . . . and now I know that’s not the case.

I’ll unsubscribe and resubscribe again, and maybe that will fix the problem.

  4. This is a good idea and I’ve not used it, certainly would give a better overview than looking at recent posts, especially if the blogger posts on a wide range of topics or digresses a lot (thinking of my own habit of doing this). Thanks, going to give it a try. Good luck finding volunteers – wish I had time to offer, might also be a solution for our very slow build progress ๐Ÿ™

      • Not sure I’ve mentioned it but our house needs totally renovated – it’s damp and freezing as we have no heating! We are also planning to add two extensions to double it in size and let in some light. It’s a bit epic, we were going to try and do a chunk of it ourselves, but it’s a bit daunting! We started last year by having builders construct a new workshop, but lots and lots to do, and we can’t even find time to put up a deer fence ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. Oh goody! A post written specifically for me. ๐Ÿ™‚

I agree that reading one post doesn’t tell you much about the blogger. Even reading the ABOUT doesn’t do much either. We start with a purpose and after a month we have veered off course. I think that is fine. I never want to get bogged down in my blog. I want to try a little bit of everything. I want to think I provide something new each time I get a visit. I want my followers to wonder what I will have for them this time.

We rarely see a new blog start off. It is like coming in the middle of a movie film You have no idea what is going on.
The random post is a great idea. Thanks for this information. ๐Ÿ™‚
